Things to Do This Summer That Involves Your Belly … Part 1: Take a Hike

Summer! Summer ! Summer !

If you grew up watching High School Musical, you know exactly how to chant that or if you’re an Old School Dancehall Fan you’d be singing “A Summa Time Ah Ah “.  In any event the summer is upon us and I’m sure your plans to be outside this summer have to include food. If so me and yuh can par!

In this first installment of "Things to Do This Summer That Involves Your Belly," I'm recommending you add Hiking to your summer itinerary. Now I know you looking at me sideways but hear me out…

My friend was always inviting me to join her hiking group on one of their trips but honestly when I saw that this hike would include eating a meal prepared by Street Food Saturdays on the river me and my big back signed up really quick!

So, at 5am I was off to a winded start up Mount Airy. I didn’t think I’d make it, but I met a nice group of people and it quickly turned into a fruitful adventure.

The fresh air paired with the views ranging from picturesque mountain sides to old Great House architecture was exactly what I needed to take a break from the hustle and bustle of Kingston and a week of heavy screen time.

How does it include my belly you may ask?

Well while walked my belly got so excited seeing all the fruits just shouting at me, "Pick me!" There were apples, bananas, cane, pineapples, mangoes and jackfruit. I even saw my first avocado tree and I was too excited I had to check my age. So, if you’re really lucky yuh just a walk and an eat fresh organic fruits from the tree and trust me it hits different. Plus you burn off all the calories as you walk, sounds like win/win.

Now to the part that made me sign up for this hike, the food!

Imagine walking for three hours and you are exhausted you take a seat on a rock in the river with your feet in the water that’s the perfect temperature to sooth your aching feet. I didn't go for a swim but it's also a perfect way to beat the summer heat. For breakfast I had , kidney with Callaloo, green banana, sweet potato, fry breadfruit and a fry dumpling. I don’t know if it’s just me but country cooking slaps differently and this meal was definitely worth the walk.

Sitting by the river, listening to the gentle flow of water and feeling the cool breeze, I realized that this was one of those perfect moments where nature and nourishment came together.

Hiking and foraging fresh fruits are a delightful way to spend a summer day. It’s an adventure that nourishes both body and soul. Whether you’re a seasoned hiker or a beginner, exploring trails like Mount Airy and indulging in nature’s bounty is an experience you won’t forget. So, lace up your hiking boots, grab your backpack, and set off on a journey where the trail is your kitchen, and the fruits of the forest are your feast.

Stay tuned for the next part of "Things to Do This Summer That Involves Your Belly" where we explore another exciting summer activity.

Happy hiking and happy eating!
