I’m 25 and I’ve never done a solo date.
Yup you heard me right I’ve never sat alone somewhere to eat, be it a Tastees or KFC or any restaurant or done anything alone in my 25 years. Make it worse in the last 6 years of having a designated Sykie to my Trim (Clyde to my Bonnie ) I’ve not been out and about on a Saturday alone.
But this week was a hard week and I needed to get my nails done so I decided why not make a whole day of it. So I got my nails done and went for lunch at Susie’s Bakery and Coffee Bar by myself, with 5% battery !
I fought myself to still go when I saw my battery was dying because what would I do sitting alone at a restaurant with a dead phone, thank God the better me won the battle as it was such a refreshing experience.
Surprisingly my phone held up so i was able to listen to a podcast while I had my grilled cheese with bacon on the freshest bread I’ve ever had (and I don’t mean lacking flavor for my Jamaican people) along side a cup of subpar iced coffee but it served its purpose.
I’m not gonna lie I felt awkward wondering if people were watching me eat or judging me for being alone. But when I looked around everyone was busy in their tables that they didn’t even look my way.
The rain outside meshed with the NYC café aesthetic set a cozy mood, one that fostered deep thinking and relaxation.
Being alone I was able to really hear the words of podcast and it lead me to different wave lengths of thinking.
How have I not done this before ? How is it that many people haven't done this before?
A lot are afraid to be with their own thoughts and others are afraid of how people may perceive them being alone in public but after experiencing it for myself it’s a real treat enjoying your own company and it really helps to strengthen not just your mental health to treat yourself but your confidence. Who cares if someone thinks your a loner or pathetic to be out alone ?
And to be quite frank those stares if you do get any are more likely people wishing they had the courage to go out and enjoy themselves alone.
So go for it !
